First Light at Sainte~Marie among the Hurons
by Gary McWilliams (aka Festival Nomad)
Judi and I love the winter holiday season.
Especially, the special events.
So, when we were invited to attend the opening ceremonies of First Light at Sainte~Marie among the Hurons, we jumped at the chance!
If you don’t know, Sainte~Marie among the Hurons is located in Midland Ontario.
The opening ceremonies were starting at Martyrs’ Shrine. (located just across the highway from Sainte~Marie among the Hurons)
Once the ceremonies began, fireworks lite up the sky!
Also, lights on a large “Christmas Tree” were turned on.
The whole atmosphere was warm and exciting.
Finally it was time to leave for the activities at Sainte~Marie among the Hurons.
Fortunately there was a pathway that led under the highway to the Sainte~ Marie entrance.
Fireworks were still lighting the sky!
Prior to the event we had arranged to meet our friend David Brunelle who was participating in the events cannon firing re-enactment.
Dave actually let me participate in one of the cannon shots, exciting and a bit scary.
After the cannon firing, we started our tour of First Night activities.
Like all of the events that we have attended at both Sainte~marie among the Hurons and its sister facility, Discovery Harbour (Penetanguishene), First Light was really well done!
There was so much to see and do.
Each open building showed the spirit of the First Night event!
Live music was being played in a few of the buildings.
After touring the outside, we decided to go into the warmth of the visitors’ centre.
Inside we mingled with other visitors and enjoyed different displays.
Eventually it was time to leave First Night at Sainte~Marie among the Hurons and head for home.
Unfortunately, our car was parked across the highway at Martyrs’ Shrine!
Fortunately, the event’s organizers has thought of everything and a First Light “shuttle bus” was there to take us back to our vehicle!
